The difference between STEM strand and the other strands is its focus on advanced concepts and topics.
More popularly known as STEM, this strand is the perfect choice if you are planning to go to college and study Applied and Pure Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering.
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are intertwining disciplines when applied in the real world.
- The STEM strand offers a subject on Earth Science that would discuss continental drift, index fossils, and renewable energy. This strand will also help the student identify areas that are vulnerable to disasters, interpret hazard maps, and learn the proper use of hydrometeorological tools. You will also learn to identify the different species of monkeys or join the environment conservationists in saving Earth. Through the STEM strand, you can be an Eco Warrior.
- Take out your calculators and get a piece of paper – this should be your starter pack for the Pre-Calculus and Basic Calculus classes offered in the STEM strand. These tools are all essential once you take your bachelor course in Mathematics or Engineering.
- Physics classes in the STEM strand will explain the various phenomena that are happening around us. You can also try magic tricks of kinematics, momentum, impulse, and a lot more. Physics classes also include the various thermodynamic concepts, oscillations, and gravity.
Graduates of STEM also end up studying Chemistry, and Biology. Fair warning: STEM is not for the faint-hearted.
Career paths after the STEM strand include:
- Agriculture: For people who love being outdoors, STEM is the strand for you. You can get degrees varying from agricultural engineering, animal science, food technology, horticulture, forestry, or veterinary medicine.
- Engineering: Subjects under STEM are tailor-filled to college programs such as marine engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, electronics & communication engineering, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering.
- Health Care: Anatomy and Physiology just got easy with the STEM curriculum specialized subjects of chemistry and biology. Your future might hold you as a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physical therapist, nutritionist, dentist, or medical technologist. I can already see that white coat on you.
- Mathematics and Science: Mathematics and Science are the heart of the STEM curriculum. Different technical career paths are open for you to take on such as becoming a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a biologist, or a chemist. Various industries such as banking, civil service, financial services, consulting, and retail can become your playground in the future.
Prerequisites
To qualify for STEM, you have to present to the SHS Registrar proof of the following:
- Final grade of 85% in both Science & Mathematics in your Grade 10 report card
- Ranked 86% and above in the STEM subtest of the NCAE
