Negros Academy Commemorates Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2022
After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid19 pandemic Negros Academy (NA) hosted the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2022 on August 31, an annual event celebrating the Philippines, the Filipino culture, and simply being Filipino.
With “Filipino at mga Katutubong Wika: Kasangkapan a Pagtuklas at Paglikha” as its central theme, Negros Academy students from grades 7 through 10 led the activities and included the promotion of the many indigenous languages of the Philippines. It also displayed the various local and regional outfits, such as the Filipiniana and the Barong Tagalog.
The day began with a prayer led by Grade 7 adviser April Z. Bulgado and was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the Negros College Hymn by the Sedayag choir. NA’s principal Dr. Ruthelia C. Labaco then provided the event’s welcoming address and Chloe F. Barrera, NA’s Assistant Principal, gave her own message to the students.
Some of the day’s highlights include:
- Poems (what poems? original/made by the students?) by Jeb Jielle C. Pasilan and Jomel Indiape
- A song (what song?) performed by Jarth Andrei F. Gabotero
- The “Cariñosa”, a Philippine dance of colonial-era origin, was performed by the Sedayag Dance Troupe
- “Mazurka Boholana”, a Spanish-inspired ballroom dance from the Bohol province of the Philippines, was performed by the grade 9 students
- “Subli”, a religious folk dance mostly found around the Tagalog province of Batangas, was performed by the grade 7 students
- “Alitaptap”, another folk dance originating from the province of Batangas was performed by the grade 8 students
- “Meligoy de Cebu”, originating from Consolation near the city of Cebu, was performed by the grade 10 students
There were also pop quizzes given between presentations by Mr. Joshua Bejano, the Master of Ceremony, throughout the event and the best-costumed instructors and students of the day were later recognized (who were they?).
